Gala Times!

I like to attend the odd Gala now and then but the last few weeks were quite the exception. I had just pulled out an old tuxedo from my closet to see if it would still fit for an upcoming black tie event that I had been invited to, when I recieved a surprise invite to THE wine dinner of the year, if not the past several years. My friends James Johnson and Nick Kosiuck, who own Cru Wine Selections, had just offered me a last minute invite to a black tie Angelo Gaja dinner that evening at the Hotel Georgia! This was going to be a huge wine event, with several of the top chefs in Vancouver pairing their menu's with some of Angelo Gaja's top wines from several vintages. After a brief moment of thinking I couldn't make it, sense kicked in, and I said "I'm in!"  I had an invite for two and, being last minute, it was too late for Mary to change her work schedule so, a quick call to good friend Farzad and, lo and behold, he was available! Angelo Gaja is one of the top winemakers in Italy's Piedmont region and his wines are sought after all over the wine collecting world. This would be a rare chance to try some older vintages of Angelo Gaja's truly exceptional Barbaresco's, Barolo's, and Brunello's from some of his best vintages. The lineup of top Vancouver chef's included Frank Pabst from Bluewater Cafe, Pino Posteraro from Cioppino's, David Hawksworth, Vikram Vij, Ken Nakano from Hotel Georgia, Adam Pegg from la Quercia, and Thomas Haas! What a line up. It was an amazing feat to have all the chef's under one roof and the Hotel Georgia's staff did a remarkable job of bringing each of the chef's individual dishes out in a timely fashion. Each restaurant had their best sommelier's there to pour the accompanying Gaja wines too, so the entire evening was run like a swiss timepiece. Our emcee for the night was Patrick Corsi, from the Quattro family of restaurants, and this evening's main purpose was to raise funds for the BC Cancer Agency. Both Nick and James had lost their fathers due to cancer so the fundraising portion of the evening was near and dear to their hearts. There were about 75 odd people at this outstanding event and the highlight of the night was having Mr. Angelo Gaja spending time at each of our tables talking about his wines. We thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the eveing and a big number was raised in the auction portion of the evening which included a free year of lease payments on a 2013 Porsche Boxster, donated by the Dilawri group, with a year's insurance kicked in by Paul Zalesky and All West Insurance. A 3.0 Litre bottle of Gaja Barolo Sperss 1988 signed by Angelo himself fetched a large number! This was generously donated by James and Nick from Cru Wine Selections. A truly memorable evening of exceptional wines and great food, and a great reason to keep a tux (that still fits) handy. At least it still fit before the dinner. Back to the gym! Cheers, Barry
